Broadening Opportunities for Kids Through Parks & Recreation

Every afternoon across St. Johns County, children head into programs that provide structure, safety, and opportunity. For many families, Parks & Recreation is where their afterschool enrichment experience begins. Parks & Recreation programs extend far beyond sports. Through County community centers, the department provides consistent afterschool enrichment programming while creating space for learning, creativity, and activities that support the whole child.

A cornerstone of this work is Afterschool Enrichments, a long-standing Parks & Recreation Department program operated by Parks & Recreation staff and supported through departmental resources. Offered exclusively at Parks & Recreation community centers throughout St. Johns County, Afterschool Enrichments provides the stable framework families rely on each day after school.

Within that framework, Parks & Recreation partners with nonprofit organizations and community groups to deliver specialized enrichment opportunities. These partnerships allow children to explore new interests while remaining in familiar, trusted environments—without disrupting the consistency of their afterschool enrichment routine.

Recent enrichment offerings through the Friends of Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, in collaboration with SJC Cultural Events, Inc., are strong examples of how these partnerships broaden opportunities for kids. Offered at the W.E. Harris Community Center and Ketterlinus Gym, these sessions occur during the existing Afterschool Enrichments program, allowing children to access new learning experiences within the Parks & Recreation programs they attend every day.

Throughout each session, Parks & Recreation professionals remain present before, during, and after programming as part of the ongoing Afterschool Enrichments program, ensuring continuity, supervision, and a consistent experience for participating families.

The St. Johns County Parks Foundation is proud to support all Parks & Recreation programs and facilities that serve children and families countywide. Support to the Foundation helps strengthen all Parks & Recreation’s programs and expands opportunities for youth across St. Johns County.
