At first glance, professional wrestling might seem like a sport defined by physical strength, agility, and quick reflexes. But for one local wrestler, Joseph Maxwell, it’s a testament of determination, and breaking through barriers—both physical and mental.
Joseph was diagnosed with glaucoma before he turned one, which resulted in almost no sight in his left eye and limited vision in his right. But in a world where sight is often essential, Joseph wasn’t willing to let his vision loss stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming a professional wrestler.
"I can mainly just see shapes," Joseph explains. "I can’t really see details in people, which in wrestling, is a lot to figure out and overcome."
Despite these challenges, Joseph didn’t back down. With the guidance of his coaches, Brandon Bullock and Samuel Shaw, Joseph has been training hard, learning how to adapt his movements and techniques to his unique needs. "We changed how we trained to make sure he got effective training," says Coach Brandon. "But we weren’t gonna change the bumps or suplexes. He’s been thrown around in there... and he takes it like a champ."
The first day in the ring was anything but easy. "It was terrifying," Joseph admits. "I had no clue what I was getting into." But with determination and the support of his coaches and teammates, he pressed on. "We tell all of our students to treat him like any other wrestler," Coach Brandon says. "He didn’t sign up to be babied."
Joseph's journey has not been without doubt. "There was a moment where I didn’t know if I could do it," he confesses. "But I knew I’d be really mad at myself if I quit."
Today, Joseph stands as an example of what it means to defy expectations and push beyond what others might see as limitations. "In January, I never would have thought I would be in a position like this," Joseph says, smiling with newfound confidence. "And now I am, following my dreams."
