Saving the Canright House

The Canright House is a beach house that Martin Luther King would stay in when visiting St. Augustine, In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King had plans to stay at the Canright house while attending the Southern Christian Leadership. However, before he arrived Dr. King learned that the home was shot at and firebombed by segregationist who thought he was there. The house was later purchased by a couple who had plans to build around it, but their requests were denied. The house was facing demolition but instead was donated to our foundation!

St. Johns County Parks Foundation Inc. stepped up and donated this historical building to St. John's County. We were able to secure $400K in State funding and an additional $200K in County funding to support relocating and restoring this historic home! Thanks to this tremendous feat, the Canright house will now reside in Collier-Blocker-Puryear Park right across the street from where the county is pursuing an initiative by the State to be the host site of the state sponsored Black History Museum. The local community is enthusiastically embracing this piece of history being added to their neighborhood and we are truly honored to have been able to take charge in preserving such a significant artifact of our county's history!
